New Reef tourism campaign offers 'best job in the world'
The State Government and Tourism Queensland are searching the globe for candidates for the "Best Job in the World" - a $150,000 six month contract based on a Great Barrier Reef island.
Acting Premier Paul Lucas said the campaign was part of the State Government's push to drive international tourism during some of the toughest international tourism climates every experienced.
"Tourism is a vital part of the Queensland economy," Mr Lucas said.
"This campaign is about us working hard to protect the $18 billion a year that tourism generates in Queensland and the jobs that go with it.
"Traditional tourism advertising just doesn't cut it sometimes and we are thinking outside the box by launching this campaign.
"The successful applicant will live on Hamilton Island for six months and travel to other Islands of the Great Barrier Reef and report back on their adventures to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries, video updates.
"They'll also have to talk to media from time to time about what they're doing so they can't be too shy and they'll have to love the sea, the sun, the outdoors.
"The fact that they will be paid to explore the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel and generally live the Queensland lifestyle makes this undoubtedly the best job in the world.
"They'll have a great job and be doing a great job for tourism in Queensland at the same time."
Airfares from the successful applicant's home country and live-in accommodation on Queensland's Hamilton Island are included.
Applicants can come from anywhere in the world and the job description includes exploring the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swimming, snorkelling, making friends with the locals and generally enjoying the tropical Queensland climate and lifestyle. Candidates will still have to undertake a genuine recruitment process.
Mr Lucas said the "Best Job in the World" campaign was a $1.7 million global marketing strategy that will increase the profile of Queensland's Great Barrier Reef islands.
"More people research and book their holidays online than every before with user-generated content on websites such as Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree, Facebook, You Tube and any number of travel blogs playing a major role in people's travel plans," Mr Lucas said.
"We expect this smart marketing investment to generate more than $70 million worth of publicity for Queensland."
Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said the "Best Job in the World" was the type of cutting edge marketing strategy Tourism Queensland was renowned for.
"We have one of the most amazing destinations in the world and as Queenslanders we are fortunate to have it all on our doorstep," Ms Boyle said.
"We want to open our doors to the world and invite one lucky person come and live the Queensland lifestyle themselves for six months and then tell the rest of the world about their experiences."
Ms Boyle said some people might question whether it was risky to let an unknown individual become an unofficial tourism spokesperson for Queensland.
"When the idea was first floated with Tourism Queensland's industry partners they absolutely loved it and we have received fantastic support from local industry in the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef," she said.
"I think the biggest risk will be that the successful candidate won't want to go home at the end of the six months."
Ms Boyle said in addition to a salary package of AUD $150,000 for the six month contract, the successful applicant would receive return airfares from the nearest capital city in their home country, accommodation on Hamilton Island, travel insurance for the contract period, computer, internet, digital video and stills camera access.
"They will also have access to and report on visits to all the Great Barrier Reef islands that run from Cairns to Bundaberg.
"How would it be if you were suffering the current harsh Winter in New York, Paris and London to be able to escape and work somewhere as amazing as the Great Barrier Reef."
Applications are open until February 22. Eleven shortlisted candidates will be flown to Hamilton Island in early May for the final selection process and the six month contract will commence on July 1.
The campaign will run in the Australian domestic market and 10 key international markets, making it Tourism Queensland's first truly global campaign.
"The campaign will be supported by extensive PR and digital marketing activities, advertising in major national print and online media outlets throughout the world, tactical cross promotion marketing with local travel and media partners and in store promotion with participating travel partners," Ms Boyle said.
She said the campaign was being funded cooperatively by the State Government through Tourism Queensland, major partner Hamilton Island, regional partners and local industry.
"This is a legitimate job which is open to anyone and everyone".
"Well almost everyone - as much as I would love to, I don't think I'll be allowed to apply."
